Cat's Out of the Bag

Lion Around the Zoo.

Back at the museum, the Vorpal Mask opened a hole, fell into it, and closed it over the top of himself. Worse yet, he took the [[museum’s meteorite]] with him! Days have passed without indication of what that masked man is after.

Top Panel (Across Both Pages). External. San Augustine Zoo’s “Into Africa” Exhibit. Daytime.
The class of Homeroom E 14 B is at a park that is an arboretum with animals instead of trees. Fe’eckisla, Gre’edic is running between the exhibits of various African cats.

Side Panel.
A man pulls a metal mask out of a backpack. He puts the mask over his face. In that instant, he becomes the … Vorpal Mask!

“Beware the jaws that bite, the claws that catch!” the mask yells in the language of the Outlands.

Then the Vorpal Mask runs and jumps into the lion’s exhibit.

Side Panel.
Colored sands flow from beneath shirts to cover the hands and faces of the wearers. In a moment they are covered in the sand masks depicting the cat-god of battlegrounds. They rush to keep anyone from interfering with the Vorpal Mask.

Cat Out of the Bag

Trouble in the Halls of Time.

Splash Page. Interior. Museum of Natural History. Day.

Skeletons of giant wingless dragons tower over the chamber. Winged hatchlings with their wings opened wide bank and glide against the ceiling. Skeletons of massive, impossible creatures poke out of the side galleries. Alarms blare. And, a man — wearing a metal mask depicting the cat god of slicing — runs between the dragon’s feet.

In the language of the Outlands, the metal mask growls, “Beware the jaws that bite, the claws that catch!”

The masked man’s fingers cut through the wingless dragon’s leg bones, and the mass of bones begins falling upon the classmates of Room East 14B.

In English, the masked man yells, “You shall not catch the Vorpal Mask!”

Metal gates clang as they fall across the doors trapping everyone in with the falling bones.

Gridiron Skirmish

Splash Page. Exterior. George Washington High School Football Practice Field C. Night.

The eight-story bulk of the central dormitory wing speckled with room lights blocks out the stars and looms over the yellow goal posts. Monsters formed of roots have ripped up through the TruTurf of the freshmen practice field surrounding the boys of dorm room 2C114 – Quin Ainsworth, Gre’edic “Gray” Fe’eckisla, Henrique Mata, Julio Ramirez, Andrew Reynolds, Alec Savidge, Stass Willemse, and Myung Woo – and their room monitor. With the shaking of the ground, the monstrous creations rip one leg free of the ground to shift forward and force their wiggling mass of roots back into the ground. They take one more step towards the surprised boys.
